Colorful Stitches Harvest Pumpkin Pattern
Bonnie Burton of Colorful Stitches has designed knitted pumpkins that are worked in the round. For these stuffed decorative pieces, gauge is unimportant. Using thicker yarns yields bigger pumpkins; vice versa if the yarn used is finer. Yardages are guidelines and reflect the large and tall pumpkins knitting at 3 to 3.5 stitches per inch and the medium pumpkin knitting at 5 stitches per inch.
Pumpkins can be knit with an optional gathering technique (makes the pumpkin more realistic) for which instructions are given complete with photos. Instruction for knitting the stems is included. Stems are shaped with short rows and use only a few yards. Suggestions are included on how to vary the surface appearance of the pumpkins with duplicate stitches (as in Jack-o-lantern face). The pattern includes a tip for handling the 4-stitch cast on on double point needles. Pumpkins are stuffed with polyester fiberfill and are either decorative or can be used as pillows...plump and soft.
These pumpkins pictured made their debut as a knitted exhibit at Vogue Knitting LIVE Chicago and have since often appeared as the autumn front window display in Colorful Stitches' Lenox, MA store.
